My story

What was your VET journey?

My VET journey began in 2014 when I found myself needing a career change from my financial background. I had no ‘hands on’ experience, having never built anything with my hands, however I knew I enjoyed working with numbers. After some research, I enrolled myself in a Certificate II Electrotechnology (pre-apprenticeship).

I really enjoyed the course, so I completed an electrotechnology apprenticeship. During my apprenticeship, I undertook a Diploma of Management in my own time, to further develop my skills and knowledge. I treated my apprenticeship as a four-year job interview and haven’t looked back since. I was humbled to be named Apprentice of the Year at the Victorian Training Awards – allowing me a platform to promote the VET sector and its unparalleled opportunities.

I have since completed further VET training and am now a project supervisor at an award winning commercial electrical company. Part of my role involves supporting and guiding our apprentices through their learning and career journey.

What advice would you give to students who are considering a vocational pathway?

VET isn't the "alternative", VET can be your first choice – it's a choice that will give a strong foundation to build your career upon.

What challenges did you face along the way?

Starting my VET studies later in life meant that I had more financial responsibilities while I was doing my courses.

My partner and I weighed this up but decided it was in our family's best interest for me to be in a career I loved with opportunity to grow.

The additional benefit of doing an apprenticeship meant I was still earning money while I was learning.
