Anger has a um a bad reputation, but

0:07

anger can also be a powerful motivator.

0:10

Staff member rang me recently and she

0:12

said, "I have an 83y old woman living

0:14

under a bridge." The woman said to my

0:17

worker in a trembly old 83y old voice,

0:22

"If you could just get me a room for a

0:24

couple of nights, I'll go back to the

0:26

bridge."

0:28

83 years old.

0:34

I mean, if these stories don't don't

0:36

make your blood boil, there's something

0:38

wrong, isn't there? I mean, there has to

0:40

be an element of controlled anger in my

0:44

work. There has to be. I started as a

0:48

young social worker at a homeless

0:50

person's night shelter in Melbourne. I

0:53

saw acts of um want and kindness, but I

0:57

saw horrific scenes of brutality. Into

1:00

all of that male stream, I saw elderly,

1:03

frail people who shouldn't have been in

1:05

such an environment. And uh so my whole

1:07

effort was trying to get them out and

1:09

into quality and secure housing where

1:12

they had some level of security and um

1:15

and people cared about them.

1:18

Winter works with people who society is

1:21

abandoned. They're often uh isolated and

1:23

lonely and frightened. So we feel that

1:25

they should have access to good quality

1:28

age care. First two years I was the only

1:30

employee but it is now grown to be the

1:32

largest provider of housing and age care

1:34

services for elderly homeless people.

1:37

Primarily it starts off with housing um

1:40

and social work services for people who

1:42

are vulnerable through to u full age

1:44

care services whether it's firstly in

1:46

the home which is homes that we would

1:49

either build or be public housing or

1:51

then it goes to nursing homes. Winryham

1:54

in fact has the the first nursing home

1:56

for homeless people in Australia and

1:58

probably the first one in the world.

2:01

One of the inspiring things is to see

2:03

elderly homeless people who arrive tail

2:06

between their legs, frightened,

2:08

timbered, and slowly opening up like a

2:11

like a flower and um and starting to

2:15

learn to trust. And then the crowning

2:18

achievement is when they start to

2:20

complain.

2:22

That's that's such a wonderful

2:24

experience when a homeless person looks

2:26

at you and says, "The food's shit."

2:30

It means that they they know they're not

2:32

going to get evicted. They're not going

2:33

to get punched for complaining. They are

2:37

rejoining the human race. It's so

2:39

exciting when that happens.
