Jess McGeachin:

Hi. My name is Jess McGeachin. I'm an author and an illustrator, and I'm so excited to be this year's author ambassador for the Premiers’ Reading Challenge.

I get my inspiration for my books, from a whole heap of different places.

I love being outside and I love being in the natural world. So for me, going for a walk to the park or maybe the bush is a really great place to get inspiration.

I also spend a lot of time at places like museums and libraries. It’s a great way of sparking interest and inspiration in my writing.

When I'm writing, it feels a little bit like falling asleep. It feels a bit like having a dream. It kind of starts slowly and then builds up bit by bit. So I try not to worry about what the big picture is, or where I'm going. It's just one foot in front of the other, one word after another word, and then all of a sudden you've got a sentence, and then you've got a paragraph, and then you've got a chapter, and then you've got a book.

So that's what I'd say. Start with a few words and keep going.

It feels amazing to be part of the Premiers’ Reading Challenge this year, and I'm so proud to be reading alongside every one of you.

Can't wait for the stories that we're going to discover.
