Become a Koorie teacher in Victoria

Study pathways and supports available to help more First Nations peoples teach the future.

There are now a range of study pathway options and supports available to help more First Nations peoples to study and secure work in Victorian government schools as either teachers or education support staff.

Aspiring Koorie Teachers (AKT) Now

AKT Now supports First Nations peoples to work and learn as Education Support staff in Victorian government schools while they complete their teaching or educational support studies.

If you are a First Nations person wanting to complete a Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support, or an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in teaching here in Victoria, you may be eligible to participate in AKT Now.

Students taking part in this program will:

  • Be supported for two years through paid employment as Education Support staff in a Victorian government school while completing their qualifications.
  • Also receive culturally inclusive supports and mentoring from qualified community mentors throughout their training and employment.

Eligibility

To be eligible you must:

  • Identify as Koorie (Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander)
  • Be a Victorian resident
  • A domestic student wanting to complete a Certificate IV in School-Based Education Support course, or a domestic student in the third or fourth year of an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) qualification or in a relevant postgraduate qualification, and undertaking a minimum of 50% equivalent full-time study load at the time of assessment.
