Know your rights as a student

Understand your rights before you enrol in a course.

When you pay for training, you have the same rights as when you buy any product or service in Australia. You are covered by the Australian Consumer Law(opens in a new window) (ACL).

Before you enrol or enter into an agreement with a training provider, they must give you information about:

  • the training, assessment and support services they provide, and
  • your rights and obligations.

Research the training provider

As you would with any major purchase or investment, you should do your research before you commit. Fees, services and study options can vary across different TAFE and training providers, even for the same course.

Check your eligibility for government funding

You may be eligible for government funding to help pay for your course, including Skills First and Free TAFE.

Ask about fees

Before you sign an enrolment contract, ask the training provider for the following information about the fees:

  • an itemised fee statement, including tuition fees, books and materials fees, and student service fees, and when they’re due
  • information about concessions or refunds, and how to claim them
  • the census date, which is the last day you can withdraw from the course without losing any of the fees you’ve paid.

Find out more information about fees and funding.

Read the contract carefully

An enrolment contract is a legally binding contract so take the time to read it carefully.

Before you sign anything, make sure you:

  • read the enrolment contract carefully
  • look out for any hidden fees, such as fees for withdrawing
  • understand the details of any offers or incentives
  • get advice about the contract if there is anything you don’t understand.

If you have problems with a contract

Never sign an enrolment contract if:

  • the training provider pressures you to sign
  • you think you may have been misled
  • anything in the contact seems unfair
  • the contract is blank.

See our make a complaint as a student page for advice.
