Road safety camera types

Both fixed location and mobile speed cameras are used in Victoria to keep roads safer.

Red light cameras are placed at traffic intersections. All cameras detect red light offences and some also detect speed offences too.

Mobile road safety cameras are installed in unmarked vehicles. Although mobile speed cameras are not sign-posted, they are not deliberately hidden.

Point-to-point road safety cameras calculate the average speed of a vehicle by determining the time taken to travel between 2 points.

The 40km/h zones are located in places with a high concentration of pedestrians (near schools and shopping strips) and also where road work is being undertaken.

These cameras detect and take photos of drivers who are not wearing their seatbelt correctly or use portable devices, like mobile phones.

New camera technology is regularly trialled in Victoria to improve road safety.
