Tier 2: Early intervention and cohort specific mental health support for students

School mental health support for students with specific needs or vulnerabilities.

In Tier 2, schools:

  • identify students with emerging or moderate mental health concerns
  • intervene early with a range of supports
  • provide targeted support to specific cohorts of students.

Tier 2 activities and programs complement and build on Tier 1 to provide additional support for students with specific needs or vulnerabilities.

School’s role in early intervention for mental health needs

Teachers and school leaders are not expected to be mental health professionals. But schools can help reduce the severity of young people’s mental health concerns with early intervention.
