Project overview
Work is now complete on Maidstone Tram Depot. The new state-of-the-art facility will maintain and house Melbourne’s new G Class trams.
The facility has 11 maintenance tracks and space for around 40 trams to be parked between passenger runs; with space to expand for a further 20 trams in future.
The project has extended the local tram line on Hampstead and Williamson roads to connect the new depot with the rest of Melbourne’s tram network.
The first new G Class test tram was delivered to Maidstone in September 2025. It has commenced a comprehensive testing program which will ensure it is ready for passengers. Once the testing is complete, new trams will roll out on routes 59, 57 and 82 over coming years.

Maidstone Tram Depot design
The depot’s design is sensitive to the local area, with noise walls, optimised lighting, and arrangement of buildings and tracksto help reduce potential impacts on nearby neighbours.
Sustainable features include rainwater harvesting, solar panels, and use of recycled materials.
Catching the tram
The nearest tram stop where passengers can catch Route 82, is about a 5 minute walk from Maidstone Tram Depot.
The new tram track in Williamson and Hampstead roads is for out-of-service trams as they travel between the Depot to start/finish their passenger runs.
