Tutor Learning Initiative

Information about this important initiative that provides targeted small group learning support in literacy and numeracy to students in government and low-fee non-government schools.

Overview

Introduced in 2021, the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) provides government and low-fee non-government schools with funding to employ tutors to deliver targeted small group learning support to students who need it most, with a focus on literacy and numeracy.

The initiative is consistent with Australian and international evidence that demonstrates effective learning intervention can be achieved through tutoring or small group learning support.

Numeracy and literacy are foundational skills, so schools are focusing tutor learning on helping children with skills in these key areas.

Government schools and eligible non-government schools receive funding to engage tutors, who work onsite with students in school hours.

Schools determine how to put the initiative in place, based on the needs of students and the school. This includes the engagement of tutors, student support, and hours of work.

Information for parents and carers

Your school will advise you if they believe your child would benefit from participating in tutor learning. Students from prep to Year 12 can participate.

Your child may take part in small group learning in a class setting or outside of regular class, or a combination of the two. They may participate for a term or longer in order to see improvement in their learning.

If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s involvement in tutor learning, or their learning more generally, you should contact your child's school.

Information for prospective tutors

Government and non-government schools will recruit tutors as needed.

You are eligible to be a tutor in a Victorian government school if you are:

  • a teacher currently registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)
  • a teacher with VIT Permission to Teach (employed as an Education Support (ES) class employee)
  • a pre-service teacher (employed as an ES class employee) working under the supervision of a registered teacher
  • a speech therapist or occupational therapist (employed as an ES class employee) tutoring in specific identified student needs; or
  • a retired teacher who has re-registered with the VIT – retired teachers may contact the VIT for support.

Tutoring in a government school

If you are interested to register to be a tutor in a government school, you can complete your registration of interest through Recruitment Online (ROL). This will allow government schools to access your information throughout the school year to meet their tutor recruitment needs. For instruction guidelines, please refer to the guides on Applicant Help - Recruitment Online.

Note that if you are a current Department employee, and wish to register, you must log in to ROL through eduPay. Once logged into eduPay, click the 'Careers' tile, followed by the 'School Jobs' tile to navigate to ROL. If you do not already have an account, you will need to create one and submit your CV resume and work preferences to the Job Opportunities.

If you are no longer interested in being contacted about a tutor position, we recommend that you withdraw your application from ROL.

For more information about the registration process, visit support information.

Government schools are responsible for paying tutors they appoint as part of the TLI. Tutor salaries are based on salary rates and conditions as specified in the Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022, taking into account years of service and arrangements for pre-service teachers. Tutor employment may be on a full-time, part-time or casual basis. Information on VIT registered teacher salaries is available below:
