The Victorian Government established the Board of Inquiry to examine historical child sexual abuse at Beaumaris Primary School, and certain other Victorian Government schools. The Board of Inquiry was asked to report on victim-survivor experiences and provide a public record of these, the Department of Education’s response to the abuse at the time, and the most appropriate ways to support healing for victim-survivors, secondary victims and affected communities.
The Board of Inquiry’s final report made nine recommendations for reform. The Victorian Government’s response is now publicly available to read online.
The Board of Inquiry emphasised the importance of consultation with victim-survivors, their families, supporters and affected communities as a key feature underpinning successful implementation of a number of its recommendations. We will develop a genuine stakeholder engagement process informed by best-practice principles and facilitated by experts with the appropriate skills and expertise to guide this process in a trauma-informed and sensitive manner. We are seeking registrations of interest to receive information about that process, which will be developed during 2024.
