New and upgraded trains, trams

Since 2014, the Victorian Government has invested over $9 billion in new trains, trams and supporting infrastructure to meet growing passenger demand for services and create jobs in Victoria.

Made in Victoria for Victoria: Victorian Rolling Stock Strategy lays out the long-term investment plans for rolling stock manufacturing and maintenance in Victoria, providing certainty for up to 10,000 Victorian manufacturers and workers in the local rolling stock industry.

We’re also upgrading our current fleet to improve comfort, accessibility and reliability for passengers.

Upgrading Victoria’s fleet

The Victorian Government is upgrading Victoria’s current trains and trams to improve safety, reliability, accessibility and comfort while also responsibly retiring old ones.

Recent upgrade projects include:

  • The VLocity Refresh Project upgraded 75 of the oldest VLocity regional trains to make them more comfortable and accessible.
  • The North East train fleet upgrade refurbished the V/Line classic fleet regional trains on the North East line ahead of delivering new standard gauge VLocity trains.
  • Enhancing Melbourne’s Comeng train fleet, adding more comfortable seats, additional handholds, better lighting and power systems, passenger information screens, HD CCTV cameras and driver CCTV screens, PA systems and emergency buttons.
  • Refurbishing more than 85 per cent of Melbourne's trams (A, B, C, D and Z Class).
  • Restoring 12 of Melbourne’s historic W Class trams(opens in a new window), including a new impact-resistant driver’s cabin, new electronics and wiring. The trams' exteriors will also be rebuilt and repainted.
  • Further upgrades to some Z Class trams to keep them in good shape until their eventual retirement from the network.
