Road maintenance

Maintenance is a critical part of running Victoria’s road network. A functioning and well-maintained network supports safer and more reliable journeys for all road users, whether you’re driving a car or truck, riding a bike or crossing the street.

Road maintenance in Victoria

Maintenance is just one of the functions undertaken by the Department of Transport and Planning that keeps Victorians connected and moving around the state safely.

The maintenance program is developed keeping in mind the life cycle of the road, nearby infrastructure and road upgrades, changes to road function or traffic patterns and any major works that are taking place across the road network.

We’re responsible for managing and maintaining 23,000km of roads, including:

  • freeways (excluding CityLink, EastLink and Peninsula Link)
  • arterial roads (excluding service lanes, footpaths and roadside areas in urban areas)
  • a limited number of non-arterial roads.

Victorian Road Maintenance Funding Conversation Summary

Victoria has a new 10-year funding approach to road maintenance, enabling the Department of Transport and Planning to deliver works more strategically and sustainably across the state.

DTP is developing its approach to the implementation of this 10-year funding model, which puts road users at the centre of our approach to planned maintenance works.

To support this multi-year funding approach, DTP consulted with stakeholders across Victoria to understand current and future priorities when it comes to road maintenance. The conversation summary below highlights the feedback received from key stakeholders and the insights gained from road user research, shedding light on the priorities of the broader community.
